UAM was formed with the collaboration of six artists – Hussein Afeef, Ahmed Naeem, Ahmed Shujau, Hussein Ali Manik, Naushad Waheed and Ahmed Shuveyb; who strongly believed in initiating an art moment in the country. They share a dream of promoting Maldivian art abroad, and gaining international recognition and appreciation for local art. The association was registered on 8th June 2000, becoming the first art association in the Maldives.
The founder members of UAM have played prominent roles in the field of art in the country. Their work experiences stretch to a multitude of areas such as; printing on fabrics, screens, designing interiors, conceptual designing, illustrations, sculpting and decorative art. These artists are also widely known for their individual and original styles that they maintain in their opuses. Their paintings that mostly adorn the walls of the Presidential Palace, tourist resorts and other important places; features a variety of mediums such as water colour, acrylic and oil paint in the artists original styles.
These artists are credited with bringing influential developments in art and their work has earned national and international recognition. They have been honored at national level by winning the President’s award of recognition for services in art and design, and have also achieved numerous international awards. They have participated in regional art shows and have contributed significantly in promoting Maldivian art overseas. The establishment of UAM was the strongest step taken by the founder artists, to attain more exposure and global credence for local art. UAM has also been committed to developing art in the local community and instilling appreciation and awareness for art in the society by conducting various seminars, classes and workshops especially aimed at encouraging and engaging the youth. The association aspires to remain committed and dedicated to its cause of developing and enriching art in the Maldives.
